About this course

This course shall equip learners with the relevant skills, knowledge, and competencies to be able to effectively work within the field of health and social care while holding a managerial position. It will equip them with competencies and knowledge related to quality, people management, ethical considerations, financial management, and methods of supporting the patient and ensuring their wellbeing. Furthermore, students shall be given the option to choose two elective modules focusing on different areas, including mental health, challenging behaviour, substance abuse, and dementia care and awareness.ย

Learning Outcomes for Knowledge obtained at the end of the programme. The learner will be able to:

  2. List and discuss various theories of leadership and their applicability to health and social care settingย 

  3. Describe the financial department structure in healthcare as well as the role of finance within healthcare institutionsย 

  4. Describe the principles of ethics and ethical considerations in healthcare as well as describe terms such as autonomy, justice, nonmaleficence and beneficenceย 

  5. Describe different types of communication methods relevant for health and social careย 

  6. Identify the main influence of effective people management in health and social care and their associated tools, techniques, and frameworks that can be used for effective people managementย 

  7. Describe the principles of quality in the setting of health and social care as well as identify the best practices for achieving quality within the fieldย 

  8. Identify the potential repercussions of bad quality in healthcareย 

Learning Outcomes for Skills obtained at the end of the programme. The learner will be able to:

  1. Identify the principles of management which are applicable to health and social care

  2. Show understanding and knowledge of authentic, collective, charismatic, and other types of leaders in healthcare

  3. Demonstrate awareness and basic knowledge of financial risk management and various challenges faced by healthcare management in regards to patient safety, quality, human resources, and financeย 

  4. Practice health and care in compliance with the code of ethics of healthย 

  5. Demonstrate understanding of the role of effective communication in overall customer satisfaction and the importance of having effective communication techniques with colleagues

  6. Show understanding of the effectiveness of people management on the overall performance of health organizations as well as discuss potential barriers to effective people managementย 

  7. Demonstrate understanding of the importance of quality and quality management in health and social care and discuss its relevance to customer service.

Anna Mukhortova Aquilina

Anna is a Learning and Development Specialist at Enteractive, Malta. Her areas of focus and expertise as an L&D Specialist are eLearning Design using Articulate 360 Suite and Adobe Captivate; Management and optimization of Learning Management Systems; and Corporate Training Delivery.

She has 2 degrees from the University of Malta: a Bachelor of Psychology (Hons) and Bachelor of Science in Nursing Studies (Hons).

Anna worked as a Staff Nurse at Mater Dei Hospital from October 2016 to August 2019, and she also teaches English as a foreign language.

She has special interests in quality, project, and change management. She is also currently reading for a Masterโ€™s Degree in Audiology at the University of Malta. ย 

Due to her extensive experience in the fields of Learning and Development, Anna is passionate about making any type of learning experience personalized and strategic so that it can benefit individuals and prepare them to work in the industry. She also takes the initiative to make learners aware of the change and the importance of staying motivated and resilient in rapidly changing work environments.

Sylvana Zammit Pulo

Dr. Sylvana Zammit Pulo has a Ph.D. in Educational Studies Educational Leadership and Administration, and Ph.D. in Philosophy: Is the concept of E-leadership relevant to a physical school context? both from The University of Warwick. She also has higher and graduate studies in Psychology, Adult Education, and Continuing Education and Teaching.

Dr. Zammit Pulo lectures on various topics. The main areas she is involved in are Personal & Social Development for Business Education, Experiential Learning, School Experience, Portfolios, Sexuality Education & Personal Skills, Citizenship Education & Media Education, Inclusive Education, and Teaching Practice Files & Personal Skills.

At the Level 5 Diploma in Health & Social Care Management, she is oriented to train students in the modules of Leadership, Social Skills Development & Management.

Surrounded by a family of Healthcare professionals, her aim is to mentor and empower students, to further develop their hard and soft skills, their attitude, and their understanding of the culture in the healthcare and social care environment.

Dr. Zammit has been involved in Malta Red Cross training courses (First Aid and Psychological Support).

Joanna Taylor

Joanna Taylor is a Staff Nurse at NPICU and the Department of Health, Malta.

She attained her degree in Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Malta from October 1995 to July 1999. She also obtained Secondary Level Education from September 1993 to June 1995, and the Advanced Level Education in the following year. She also took short courses for the Paediatric Basic Life Support for Health Care Professional, and Certificate of Competence in Handling Lines in Neonates and Paediatrics at Mater Dei Hospital.

Besides working as a Nurse and Lecturer, Joanna is also fond of doing makeup which led her to become the makeup artist in a local TV drama under Herman Bonaci Productions, Malta from October 2015 to May 2016.

She published an article on the โ€œSafety of Cosmetics use during Pregnancyโ€ in the local midwifery journal โ€œThe Midwifeโ€.

Her experience in both nursing and the beauty industry is valuable in teaching students a client-centred approach to care. By drawing on her diverse background, she can help students understand the importance of considering a client’s individual needs, preferences, and goals in providing care. This can ultimately lead to better outcomes and a more positive experience for clients.

  • Award in Principles of Health and Social Care Management (MQF 5, 6 ECTS) โ€“ This module highlights the basic principles of providing care and management within the field of health and social care. It shall look at adopting a person-centred care approach, the importance of ensuring compliance with laws, regulations, and codes of practice within the industry, and the importance of analysing own practices to ensure quality.ย 

  • Award in Leadership in Healthcare (MQF 5, 6 ECTS) โ€“ This module shall look at the priorities and challenges that leader faces within the field of health and social care. Furthermore, it shall also look at different types of leadership styles and the ones most relevant within the field of health. This module shall also cover current leadership developments and trends. Furthermore, this module also looks at interpersonal skills required by the healthcare professional including empathy, teamwork, time management, assessing and overcoming stress, and others. Lastly, it shall look at the importance of practicing self-confidence and dealing with critical thinking and criticism. By the end of this module, learners shall be able to assess their own leadership styles within the field of health and social care.ย 

  • Award in Finance for the Healthcare Professional (MQF 5, 6 ECTS) โ€“ this award allows learners to become familiar and gain understanding and awareness about fundamental aspects of finance for healthcare. You shall become familiar with the role of financing within healthcare organisations as well as differentiate between various terms in finance. Upon successfulย completion of this module, learners shall be able to carry out various basic financial responsibilities under supervision.ย 

  • Award in Ethics in Health Practices (MQF 5, 6 ECTS) โ€“ This Module looks at legal issues, ethical issues, and regulations within the field of health and social care. Such legal and ethical issues must be taken into consideration when practicing within the field health and social care. This module shall also provide specific focus on documentation and record keeping in the field.ย 

  • Award in Supporting the Patient (MQF 5, 6 ECTS) โ€“ This module shall look at the importance of supporting the patients throughout their experience in health and social care. It shall also look at the importance of involving patients in their practices. Furthermore, it shall allow learners to become familiar with the basic principles of communicating with the patients and their relatives, processes of providing support during and after their experience as well as the main role of the carer as a supporter of the patient.ย 

  • Award in People Management in Health (MQF 5, 6 ECTS) โ€“ this module shall take a close look at proper people management in health and social care. This is a crucial skill that a manager within the field must acquire to effectively work with different stakeholders such as carers, doctors, and patients themselves. By the end of this module, the learners shall be able knowledgeable in the basic practices and theories of managing people.ย 

  • Award in Ensuring Quality in Healthcare Practices (MQF 5, 6 ECTS) โ€“ This module highlights the importance of quality, especially within the field of quality. Furthermore, it shall also highlight the steps involved towards effective improving of quality care and overall services. This module also allows looks at the importance of effective care planning.ย 

  • Award in Infection Prevention and Control (MQF 5, 6 ECTS) โ€“ this module allows learners to become knowledgeable with regards to infection prevention and control within the field of health and social care. Upon successful completion of this module, learners shall be able to practice effective preventive measures to avoid contamination and infection spread. Furthermore, this module shall also highlight basic health and safety personal hygiene measures that ensure the prevention of infection and contamination.ย 

  • Award in Challenging Behaviour (MQF 5, 6 ECTS) โ€“ This Module allow learners to become familiar with various challenging behaviour which they might come across during their career as a healthcare professional. Furthermore, this module shall equip learners with necessary tools and knowledge to effectively work with challenging behaviourย 
  • Award in Mental and Social Care (MQF 5, 6 ECTS) โ€“ This Module allows learners to become familiar with mental health and its importance in health and social care. This module will equip learners with the necessary skills and knowledge to be able to support patients with mental health issues.ย 

  • Award in Substance Abuse in Health and Social Care (MQF 5, 6 ECTS) โ€“ This module shall allow learners to become familiar with substance abuse and ways to identify, prevent and assist individuals which might be suffering from substance abuse. Healthcare professionals tend to come across substance abuse during their professional life and therefore this module shall prepare them for identifying and assisting individuals in the best way possible.ย 

  • Award in Dementia Care and Awareness (MQF 5, 6 ECTS) โ€“ this module shall prepare learners to work with, and fully support patients suffering from dementia. It shall equip learners with the necessary skills and knowledge to communicate, engage with and assist patients with dementia, their change in behaviour and personality, and mood. It will also highlight how dementia progresses.ย

  • This course targets those individuals who aim at starting their managerial career in health and social care. This course, therefore, targets individuals who are already working in health and social care and who have relevant experience.ย 

This course is intended for those who are aged 18+ and aspire to work or are already working in the health and social care industry.ย 

This programme uses a mixed-method of assessment throughout the duration of the course. Learners shall be subject to multiple choice questions based on examinations, assignments, examinations, and interviews. The chosen assessments allow learners to be tested on their ability to conduct research, study skills, academic writing skills as well as communication skills through the interview.
