Learning Outcomes for Knowledge obtained at the end of the programme:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will be able to achieve:

  1. Knowledge of the different classifications of mental illnesses such as mood disorders, anxiety disorders, somatoform disorders, schizophrenia, and other psychotic disorders
  2. Knowledge of the different causes of mental illness such as genetics, environment, childhood trauma, negative thoughts, stress and stressful events, drugs, alcohol, unhealth habits and brain chemistry amongst others
  3. Understanding of how to care for individuals who have acute symptoms, and which might be unstable before admission to stabilisation
  4. Awareness of sleep disorders, sleep hygiene, psychopharmacology in adults, depression, bipolar, anxiety disorders, dementia, psychosis and eating disorders in adults
  5. Identify early onset of symptoms of dementia through the assessment of behaviour
  6. Ability to recognise psychiatric emergencies such as aggression, violence, self-harm, suicide
  7. Use de-escalation techniques in a mental health crisis
  8. Identify instances of substance misuses such as drug use and abuse, alcoholism, use of opioids, stimulants, drugs, and any other addictions such as gambling and excessive digital use
  9. Awareness of rights and legislations governing intellectual disability
  10. Identify the factors which demonstrate behavioural abnormalities and mental illnesses in children and adolescents
  11. Plan the appropriate nursing care of the client through the assessment of health status
  12. Discuss the indications and the implementation of the various therapeutic modalities that can be implemented for the child and adolescents
